Hershey Volunteer Fire Department: Serving the Heart of Chocolate Town

The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) has been an integral part of Derry Township, also known as Hershey, since its establishment in 1905. Committed to providing fire and rescue services with 100% volunteer professionalism, HVFD is dedicated to safeguarding the community and its diverse populace.

Derry Township, the birthplace of the renowned Milton S. Hershey and home to the famous HERSHEY'S CHOCOLATE, has a year-round population of 21,273, which can swell to 80,000 during the bustling summer months. Located approximately 10 miles east of the Pennsylvania State Capitol, this 27.3-square-mile area is a vibrant mix of suburban growth, medical advancements (Penn State University College of Medicine), industry (two major candy factories), and tourism (Hersheypark, entertainment venues, and hotels). It is also home to the nation's largest private K-12 boarding school, the Milton Hershey School, with an enrollment of approximately 1,800 students.

In addition to Derry Township, HVFD provides first-due coverage to the rural Conewago Township. This neighboring township spans 16.7 square miles and has a population of approximately 3,000 residents.

The HVFD operates with a deep sense of duty and professionalism, relying entirely on volunteers who are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of their community. The department's long-standing tradition of volunteerism and community service is a testament to the strength and resilience of its members.

If you are visiting Hershey, you are welcome to stop by the firehouse located at 21 W. Caracas Avenue, just off the Square. However, as a 100% volunteer company, there may not always be personnel present at the station. To ensure someone is available, please call ahead at 717-533-2953.

The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and community service, offering essential fire and rescue protection to both Derry Township and Conewago Township. The dedication of its volunteers, combined with the rich history and dynamic growth of the Hershey area, ensures that HVFD remains a vital and respected institution in the community.
