Welcome to the Fire Prevention Page of the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department. Our mission is to provide the highest level of fire safety education and resources to our community. Whether you're a child, adult, or senior citizen, we have tailored tips and guidelines to help you stay safe. Remember, fire prevention starts with you!
Fire Prevention Tips for Kids
1. Know the Sound of a Smoke Alarm:
- Learn what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when you hear it. Make sure you know how to exit your home quickly and safely.
2. Fire Drills:
- Practice fire drills with your family at least twice a year. Know two ways out of every room and establish a family meeting place outside.
3. Stop, Drop, and Roll:
- If your clothes catch on fire, remember to stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll until the fire is out.
4. Never Play with Matches or Lighters:
- Matches and lighters are tools for adults only. If you find them, tell an adult immediately.
5. Stay Away from Fire Hazards:
- Keep away from stoves, candles, and heaters. Always be mindful of your surroundings and avoid anything that could catch fire.
Fire Prevention Tips for Adults
1. Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms:
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
2. Create a Fire Escape Plan:
- Develop a fire escape plan with your family and practice it regularly. Make sure everyone knows at least two exits from each room and a designated meeting place outside.
3. Be Cautious with Cooking:
- Stay in the kitchen while you are cooking, especially when using high heat. Keep flammable items away from the stove and never leave cooking unattended.
4. Safe Use of Electrical Appliances:
- Do not overload electrical outlets or use damaged cords. Unplug appliances when not in use and keep them away from water.
5. Fire Extinguishers:
- Keep a fire extinguisher in key areas of your home, such as the kitchen and garage. Learn how to use it and check its expiration date regularly.
Fire Prevention Tips for Senior Citizens
1. Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
- Ensure you have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If you have hearing difficulties, install alarms with strobe lights and vibration alerts.
2. Clear Exits:
- Keep pathways and exits clear of clutter to ensure a quick and safe escape in case of an emergency.
3. Mobility Aids:
- If you use a walker or wheelchair, ensure that you can easily navigate your home and reach exits. Consider an emergency evacuation plan that accommodates your mobility needs.
4. Electrical Safety:
- Avoid using space heaters and electric blankets if they are old or damaged. Keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them on when unattended.
5. Medication Safety:
- Store medications properly and avoid keeping flammable materials near them. Be cautious with oxygen tanks and avoid smoking or open flames around them.
